Course Description

  • NOTE: Because of its rigor, this course will count toward the AP Limit; however, students will not be allowed to take the AP US History exam at Stuyvesant. Students will take the NYS Regents exam.Who should take this course?Students who have completed Global 3 and 4 or AP World History or AP European History and who are interested in an intellectually rigorous course in United States History. This course fulfills the NYS US History requirement.What will we be studying?This course examines the history of the 13 colonies and the United States from 1607 up to the post-Cold War era. There will also be an emphasis on historiography.What will be expected of me?All assessments will be in-class handwritten expository essays, or short response. There will also be simulations. These will be collaborative, though ultimately requiring students to individually stand and deliver. Document analysis will be more deliberate, and less an obstacle course.How is the course taught?Lessons will be taught using the developmental lesson first pioneered at Columbia U - Teacher's College in the 1920's. Critical thinking and student participation are crucial.What are the completion requirements?Completing one's homework is essential to classroom discussion and is mandatory for each student. Grading is based on the Social Studies Department grading policies.Details and pre/co-requisites:Students should have at least a 92% average in Social Studies.
